About
My name is Liam, I live in North Lincolnshire with my wife, two daughters, two cats and a dog!
I first became interested in Kit Cars around 15 years ago and completed my first kit in the summer of 2008.
MAC#1 Build
For my first project I choose a lotus 7 style car by a company called Mac#1 Motorsport based in Sheffield.
The car was built as a track car but was road legal. Rather than fit a conventional engine, I used a 997cc motorbike engine from a Fireblade.
This meant the car had a sequential gearbox, hit the rev limiter at around 9000rmp and was insanely fast at acceleration (at least up to around 80!).
But is also meant that it was very loud and difficult to drive under non-track conditions. It also didn't have a reverse gear as it was not a requirement at the time.
I kept a detailed build blog for that first kit which is still available today (although it looks so dated!)
The build blog generated a fair but of attention at the time and as a result, my car was featured in Complete Kit Car magazine as well as a mainstream Italian car magazine that did an article on the UK Kit Car scene.
I loved build the Mac#1 but did not really get much out of it once it was on the road so not long after completing the kit, I sold it on and started thinking about my next project.
After the Mac#1, I took a couple of years off from car building but I always knew I wanted to build something a bit more special and in 2010 I started work on a AK427 kit which is an AC Cobra Replica.
My AK 427 Build
I didn't keep a build blog for the Cobra replica, instead I posted regular updates in the Running Reports section of Complete Kit Car magazine which covered the entire build process and did a full article on the build once it was complete.
I went all out on the AK427 with a custom built Chevy 5.7lt V8, expensive paint job and even hardtop roof! The car was covered in stainless steel accessories and beautiful, hand made leather interior.
It was a great car...but it cost a lot of money to build it!
The Cobra was a great car to drive and sounded fantastic but before too long, it to was put up for sale and was soon on it's way to a new owner.
That brings me to my new project.
I took an 8 year break from building cars, not because I wanted to but because I lived in a house without a workable garage throughout that time but in December 2020 we moved to a house with a good sized garage and it did not take me long to plan my next car build.
This time I want to build a car to keep so I don't want an undrivable trackday monster or a super expensive showpiece. I want to build a nice, traditional roadster that I will not be afraid to drive and I can keep for several years to come.
On with the GBS Zero build!
